Bathroom windows are big features as they usually take up a big space of the bathroom and most of the time will be in your direct eye-line when you first look into the bathroom. The best bathroom window for me is the humble awning window.

What kind of window goes in a bathroom?
So what kind of window goes in a bathroom? Well, the best type of window that goes in a bathroom is an aluminium window which is completely weather-sealed around its frame. This minimizes dust, draught and water intrusion perfect for bathrooms.
Modern bathroom windows are aluminium windows due to the above-mentioned moisture-sealed resistance and the fact they are cost-effective to manufacture.

Best types of bathroom windows
For me, the best types of bathroom windows are the sliding window and the awning window which is by far the most popular window.
Below are the most common bathroom windows we use in our renovations and some quick notes about them.
Glass block windows
Huge in the 80’s and 90s the glass block window in your bathroom is coming back into fashion. They are actually great for natural light and privacy but can be overpowering as a feature
For ventilation of glass block windows in a bathroom you will need small vents almost like mini awning windows.

Awning windows
The most popular bathroom window is the awning window. The reason the awning bathroom is the most popular is for small windows you get more glass instead of the line in the middle you get with sliders

Sliding windows
Sliding windows in your bathroom are great for long windows from a cost point of view as you can make much larger windows.

Casement windows
Casement windows we very popular for many years in Australian bathrooms but now they are more of a luxury bathroom or a window designed for a look of the bathroom that is more traditional or natural.

Most Popular Bathroom Window Coverings
You will also get a few different window covers for your bathrooms that have a few different pros and cons such as Louvre Bathroom Windows and Plantation Shutters in bathrooms.
Plantation Shutters For Bathrooms
Plantation shutters for your bathroom are often vinyl, or PVC shutters to withstand steam and humidity. You can choose from wood, but that does a little more work and cost a little more to get right but is perfect for a Hampton-style bathroom. CLICK HERE FOR FULL BREAKDOWN

Louvre Windows For Bathrooms
If you are struggling with bathroom ventilation then windows with louvre are your saviour, they take away so much steam and moisture out of your space. CLICK HERE FOR FULL BREAKDOWN

Do bathrooms need special windows?
So do bathrooms need special windows? The answer is no. Most windows are designed for harsh weather from rain to heavy sun which makes them perfect for the rigours of bathroom use.
If the window is in the shower area we are talking about something completely different as you need to ideally work around the window in the shower concept.
Below I provide a complete breakdown of having a window in the shower area and if it is something you should really do.
How much does a bathroom window cost?
This is a pretty tough question to answer but as a rough guide, you are looking at supply costs of at least $600 to $800 for a basic 1200 x 600 or a 600 x 600 sliding or awning window just to purchase no labour.
For the labour part that can really depend on the level of work, how much bricking up you are doing, the type of bathroom window and if the window is on a second floor.
As a rough costing for you, the average cost to supply and install a new window for a bathroom would be anywhere between $1000 to $3000 taking into the factors above.

Why People Make Their Bathroom Windows Smaller
Since space has become a premium more and more with housing prices going up and affordability of those big homes becoming harder and harder the idea of making space in bathrooms has turned to making windows smaller.
Owners are looking to get bigger showers, bigger vanities or a bath and the larger windows are causing issues with making that happen.
Hence the influx of smaller windows in bathrooms, also due to the boom of walk-in showers which often will have a window in the area there is a need to make that window as high as possible.
Ideally, you want the window in a shower higher or at least halfway though the height of the shower head to avoid a lot of splashing.

Final Thoughts
So finally what is the best bathroom window? The best bathroom window you should consider is an awning highlight window ideally clear to allow natural light and fresh air.
