Pros and Cons Of The Shower Ledge

Shower ledges are the most popular shower shelving we do in the 2020s and there are a few factors for this including realities you need to be made aware of.

We all hate a rusting shower shelf, I say this in almost every quote that I do these days the first question someone will ask you is “Can I have a shower niche or that shower recess?

It is touch and goes to whether you can have a shower recess it all comes down to whether is it on an external double brick wall or how far you want to go to create that.

At the end, I will tell you what they NEVER tell you about these shower ledges you need to know.

So when you do not have a double brick wall and you do not want to build one the BEST ALTERNATIVE to the shower niche is the Shower Ledge,

The Half Wall In The Shower or the Wall To Wall Wall in the shower wall be the shower shelving you will need.

PROS OF THE SHOWER LEDGE

  • No need for those pesky rusty metal shelves
  • Underarm height allows for your arms to move freely without impact
  • A great alternative to a shower niche
  • Can be made into a feature of the bathroom through tiling

CONS OF THE SHOWER LEDGE

  • May mess up with the heights of your shower mixer/tap placement
  • If not on a side wall will require a custom-made shower screen
  • Will require external trim or extra mitring
  • Will reduce shower footprint
Half Wall Shower

To be honest the two biggest cons of the half shower wall as mentioned above is the CUSTOM MADE SCREEN COST and the ENCROCHMENT OF SPACE.

If you have a tiny shower space as it is the idea of losing 75mm to 100mm of space can seem like the end of the world so the half wall can be annoying on this front.

Honestly it’s not the end of the world as it’s under arm’s height for most so won’t impact you too much.

When you are looking for an alternative to a shower niche the shower ledge or wall to wall to wall is the best you will get.

They allow you to get away from metal or ceramic shelving that will be easier to look after and sturdy without the chance you will knock your head when you bend down.

Creating a feature out of a half-shower wall

I love the half wall when you can not have a shower recess because it looks clean and is clean in comparison to all your alternatives.

You can make a feature out of the half wall as the examples below show you the most common and basic setup of this.

It requires the floor tile to run up into the wall.

Firstly it creates a simple feature without introducing another tile.

Secondly, it creates depth to your bathroom and flows so much better and to be honest I am a huge fan of it.

THE TRUTH ABOUT HALF SHOWER WALLS

So here we are the biggest issues with half shower walls they do not tell you, my friend. They mess up your shower head choice.

If you want that wall-to-wall across the bathroom shelf which many people do want, you also often want the the combo showers on a rail.

I am here to tell you that you can not have both. That sliding rail with a hose will look silly over the half-wall and annoy you.

Below is an example of what I am talking about to help show you.

  1. What I would love to know about the shower ledge is how high should you build the shower ledge to make it work in the shower area? Thanks
