Double showers are an unnecessary waste of money and space. I have been saying this based on my many years of renovating small bathrooms and also having had a double shower myself in the past.

This opinion stems from a few factors which I will cover below to help make my case.
- What is the point of a double shower?
- Why you should have a double shower?
- Different types of double showers?
- Why double showers are a waste of money
- Why double showers are a waste of space
- Final thoughts
What is the point of a double shower?
The point of a double shower is one of convenience allowing two people to be able to shower at the exact same time. Double showers for reference is two separate shower heads on separate walls often across from each other.

Why you should have a double shower?
A homeowner or renovator should have a double shower if they love the practicality and convivence it provides.
Let’s say you have the same working hours as your partner or get up at the exact same time double showers are perfect for time-poor people.
One of the best reasons to have a double shower is not to have to fight your partner for who goes first.

Subsequently, double showers allow you to make the most out of bathrooms of a large size.
Large bathrooms are perfect for having two shower heads or any bathroom you have to have a lot of wall space.
Importantly space is the biggest factor for me on why someone should or shouldn’t have a double shower.

Different types of double showers?
Double showers come in a few different types and considerations when doing your research on them.
Open Double Shower (Most Modern Set Up)
Open duel showers are two fixed panels on either side of the opening to the shower with a gap to enter through the middle.
The benefit of the double-open shower is fewer moving parts.

Wall To Wall Double Shower
Wall-to-wall duel showers are where the screens run from one wall to the other with a central door.
This dual shower is better for retaining heat and containing water in the shower area.

Behind A Wall Double Shower
My personal favorite shower but hard to photograph and explain this shower set up is where you walk behind a wall
The best part of these dual shower setups is no glass to clean!

Double Shower Wet Room
The most aggressive of layouts for two shower head showers this has a bath in the area creating a wet room.

Double Outlet Shower (Different Type Of Double Shower More Singular)
I added this here not to get confused with duel showers, double outlet showers I love and totally endorse.

They are either two shower heads on the same rail, on a smaller rail, or separate one above the other. Great for cleaning and handy.

Why double showers are a waste of money
Importantly let’s talk about cost. I personally believe double showers are a waste of your hard-earned money.
Now we are not referring to double outlet (singular setup) as covered above we are talking about two people showers at the same time double shower.
So let’s say you are renovating an existing bathroom and you want to add a second shower outlet set up for making a double shower.

Firstly you need to take the plumbing costs for the set out of the shower, we are talking about either a double drain or a very large drain.
You are also creating a second shower head outlet with a second mixer set up for use.
Lastly, we are not talking about buying another mixer, larger drain and second shower head adding to the labor part and materials cost you are looking at between $1,500 to $3,000 to add a double shower to your bathroom,
That is a huge cost for something especially if in my experience is rarely used.

Why double showers are a waste of space
Duel showers are a waste of space as they require a decent to large bathroom spacing to make them work both effectively and look like they belong
The average bathroom I renovate is around 2.5m Wide x 1.6m deep. When you install double showers in this space its cramped.
You feel like you are hitting the shower head every time you open the door
Also, the double shower requires two walls which if you are trying to fit a few things into a space can really hamper the design.

Final thoughts
Clearly you can see I am a little strong on my thoughts towards double showers but there is a reason.
For most of the past twenty years, I get potential renovators sacrificing entire practical designs it fit a double shower that really hampers their bathrooms.
Importantly I specialize in small bathrooms so my opinion is often based on clients’ poor on space or budget so I advise against it.
Definitely what they do not tell you about having two shower heads running at the same time is that they will lose pressure most of the time.
If you have the space and you love the idea of a double shower PLEASE have a double shower but if you are on the fence my advice is to stay from double showers in small bathrooms.
