Modern Scandi Laundry

We all love the classics but they are not always practical when it comes to renovating or building in the 2020s.

My focus will be to help you with that modern Scandinavian laundry design but I will weave in some classics throughout so do not worry,

The reason I use modern Scandinavian laundries as a wording is you will struggle to really get that feel or even want a traditional setup unless you live in a cold environment.

The beautiful thing about Scandinavian design is that it is elegantly simple and blends well with a lot of existing styles.

For me, as much natural sunlight should be optimized to compliment the light and airy feel of a Scandi space.

What splashback do you install for a Scandi renovation?

If you have a Scandi-style kitchen or laundry you often stress about what type of splashback you should install well I am here to help you with the best two Scandinavian splashbacks.

White On White – The most common splashback for a scandi styles is the subway off-set brick fashion or timber panelling.

Really any white splashback of a lined nature will work with this style the key is the white part is the most predominant part.

Bold Grey – This is often what you would call a concrete-looking finish slab or tile.

Really big 600 x 600 or 1200mm x 600mm tiles are used to create concrete slabs or benchtops cut off ideally for a free-flowing organic-looking splashback.

All About The Scandi Wood Finishes

Scandi designs are really about that wood finish but what is the right wood finish for a Scandavian-style renovation.

The right wood or wood finishes for a Scandinavian-style renovation are the oak, pine mahogany and ash wood species.

A simple breakdown and look of Scandinavian Laundries

Okay, team let’s keep this simple for the everyday renovator out there. The easiest ways to achieve your scandi style laundry renovation are these two keys below.

The first step is to go with a light wood base cupboard or overhead cupboard. These wood or timber finishes will bring that organic feel to the laundry space.

The second step goes with a white stone benchtop, now why stone well because the man-made engineered stone is not only nonporous it allows for the dominating wood cabinets to shine.

What tapware finish goes with this Scandi laundry style?

A bit of a weird answer to this but really any tapware will go with your laundry renovation. The nature of Scandinavian laundries compliments using any finish of tapware really it just depends on the darkness of your cabinets.

Really the most common tapware for this Nordic-style renovation was black tapware but I would say with the new additions of tapware available from places like ABI you find more Brushed finishes go like Brass and Nickel

Scandinavian Laundry Sink Finishes

There are two types of sinks to achieve the Scandia laundry or kitchen.

First, you have the farmhouse sink which to me is a more modern concept and a little large for my liking in the 2020’s

The second you have the simpler inset laundry sink often in a metal or ceramic Ikea specialty.

It all depends on the style you go for and the type of sink you like with many metal sinks a client often mentions how it does not feel natural.

Two Accessories To Add To This Style Of Laundry

Two elements to add to your laundry renovation that will really add to the theme is the bar and plants.

Firstly the bar is what you call a drying bar. Often in cold or wet areas drying clothes outside is not possible so a drying indoor bar is where the idea came from.

The drying rack can be a little complicated to get into your laundry but with enough planning out you should be able to make it work easily.

Finally, we have the not-can-sexy house plants that add to this natural feel.

So what are the best house plants to go with this Nordic laundry style well that would be topicals, succulents, creeping or leafy plants, and greenery often work better than florals.

Stay away from the floral plants and you can not go wrong.

Renovating On A Budget But Want That Scandi Laundry

My friend the best tip I can give you if you are on a budget and are renovating towards a Scandi style laundry is to use the big European wholesaler known as Ikea.

Ikea is pretty much the budget-friendly Scandinavian-style renovation you have been looking for your whole life.

Final Thoughts

So why do you want the Scandi style laundry renovation well this is why! Scandi style is functional, it’s true, but it’s never cold or clinical;

The uncluttered nature and brightness evoke a sense of calm that so many people are missing from their daily lives. After leaving a stressful day at work, the idea of returning to a home devoid of bulky furniture and clutter feels particularly appealing and something too good to pass up.

I personally love the style and I think if it goes with the overall theme of your house then you should definitely pursue it.
