Using A Freestanding Bath As A Shower

5 years ago you were not able to really do the freestanding shower bath setup due to the products around.

Often when having a shower over a bath you were stuck with the low-bricked bath that did not always give an adult the best user experience.

So can it be done? Can you use a freestanding bath or a non-bricked bath as a shower bath? Let us at Small Bathroom Renovations Perth help you out.

YES and maybe not.

The key for shower baths is you have to be practical with what you are doing. Rarely in this day and age do people want a shower curtain so if you are like most people you will want to have a type of screen set up to stop your vanity or toilet from getting wet next to it.

The reason this is key is there is only a certain type of freestanding shower bath that will work. This is called a flat edge or rimmed shower bath.

Rimmed shower baths or back-to-wall freestanding baths have a straight fat edge that allows for you to place a shower screen on it without hassle.

Like all showers over baths, you often only do this layout for space reasons.

Adults would often prefer both being separate but we don’t always have the space so the growing trend is these corner shower bath setups, especially in the small Perth bathrooms we do.

Below is a classic example of what can be done for this setup.

There are some things to consider though when creating a bathroom renovation that has a shower over a stand-alone bath.

The big one is movement, as freestanding baths do move a fair bit depending on how tight the plumber has connected it to the existing waste.

The other big consideration for a stand-alone shower bath is the height.

Most bricked shower baths are usually about 380mm to 420mm high, freestanding baths range from 500mm to 700mm which can be pretty high from stepping down and up to.

My advice is this, no one likes a shower bath they are not great for people with dodgy knees or a bad back like myself though they serve a purpose.

Some people like my wife love a bath, people who want to bath their kids or sometimes you are worried about resale.

I personally am not a big believer in resale reasons we live in a time where most people will just add one if they really wanted it but it’s important to remember it is your money, your time committed to this project you should have what you want for whoever knows how long you will be in the home.

If you do have to have a shower bath though the corner Shower Bath or the Shower Over A Bath using a freestanding bath or lastly freestanding tub for a shower are great alternative in getting the best of both worlds.
