Out With The Old In With The New
So the OG (OG is a slang term for someone who’s incredibly exceptional, authentic, or “old-school) of bathroom vanity lighting is the wall-mounted sconces. As shown below they are great for applying light towards the face at the right height. One of the issues with lighting above a mirror is the light shines your forehead down. It is why downlights are often hard to get right for face lighting at the mirror as you want the light coming at you.
The downside of this method if often space, look and cost. Due to the fact you need to wire up two electrical outlets, require a good 200mm to 300mm of space around them and lastly, they often become the feature of the wall most people try to stay away from the lighting regardless of all its pros. So that takes us to the new kid on the block.
Let There Be Light
In the last few years, there has been an explosion of new LED Mirrors on the market due to the affordability and accessibility of them. These types of mirrors have light in them often activate by a finger button somewhere at the front. These mirrors are not only a great feature without being overpowering but allow for you to get more controlled light on your face when you want it opposed having to turn it on when you walk in the door. The one downside of this, as well as mirror cabinet, are touching glass often leaves prints that can drive some people insane.
Bangers and Mash
Like bangers and mash being a staple of my mum’s home cooking, the humble downlight is the staple of bathroom renovations in the 2000s. The best way to look at downlights are they cost-effective, great lighting a space and high degree of flexibility when it comes to installation. Often the hardest task in having downlights is deciding where to put them especially if they are the only light source as you often want to have them over specific items such as a bath or shower area but by doing this they are often not in a line which can drive people a little insane.
