Whether you are renovating your laundry or building the below tips will hopefully help get that more functional space. a clever, functional space you’ll be happy to use for years to come.
Do I Go Front or Top
Front loaders are great for tight spaces because they can be stacked. Their efficient spinning cycle means less drying time for your washing and they are more energy efficient than their top-loading siblings. In comparison, top loaders have much shorter cycles, you can throw that stray pair of socks in after the wash has already started and they do vibrate less than front loaders. It’s important to pick what works for you though i often go in with my own ideas, i have to take into mind what a client has always had and what works for the day today.
The same is true for dryers. Be mindful of the size of the dryer as they be expensive to run, so energy efficiency is an important factor when updating or buying a new dryer always look for the energy star ratings when comparing different models. The laundry below located in the Bassendean below wanted to Incorporated there top loader into the room and work around it. Will decided to move the washing machine to the end to maximise the bench space
The perfect laundry is a functional one. Creating a space that flows well and gets the job done will mean washing your clothes don’t feel like a chore.
Laundries can be a tight space however it doesn’t necessarily have to be bigger to work better make your spaces and appliances in a flow; ensure that dirty laundry can go straight from the tub, to the washing machine, then through to drying and onto the countertop for folding.
Custom cabinets can maximise organization and storage in the space you have. Custom though can be a lot more expensive there is a big range of premade cabinetry that may work for you. Draws can always be handy for those pesky small items but generally, laundry is full of large towels or cleaning products. The broom closet or high closet will often be needed for brooms and washing items. Keep in mind if you don’t have a high cupboard where did you envision those items to go you don’t want to be just standing them up anywhere. Sometimes out of sight, out of mind is best.
We all need bench space. You usually can never have too much especially in a laundry where we fold and sort. The benchtop will often be dictated by your washing machine. The integrated sink is king for laundries but its the most expensive so a nice drop in the sink would work just as well. A treated wood or engineered stone is perfect
for the laundry but if you can go a nonporous top as we use the most chemicals in this area. The second image below is a laundry renovation we completed in the southern suburbs of Perth and the owner used a special laminate.
