What is a cavity slider?
Firstly let us break down what is a cavity slider in a bathroom. A cavity door is a door or multiple doors that slide into hidden pocket or recess that has been built into the wall.
You simply slide the door into the cavity section which has built in track and slows it from slamming for all us heavy handed folks.
Furthermore these pocket doors can come in glass and wood both suitable for bathrooms.

Can you install cavity sliding door into existing wall?
One of the many questions you often get asked by clients who have small bathroom is if you can install a cavity sliding door into the existing bathroom wall the answer is no.
The size of the wall you need to install a cavity slider or pocket door into is 250mm deep.
The usual size of a standard single brick wall in your bathroom will be 110mm which is not enough depth to make the 90mm door slide into.

How to install a pocket cavity sliding door into an existing bathroom?
Now we have answered why you cant install a cavity slider into an existing bathroom let me tell you the trick on how to make it work.
The best way to install a pocket slider into a bathroom with lack of depth in the wall is to build a new stud frame wall.
This new stud frame wall allows you to get enough depth for that 90mm sliding door to go in and out of.
Consequently the wall does not take up that much space in either the bathroom side or bedroom side only 250mm

Are pocket doors expensive?
Pocket doors are pretty expensive to install for bathroom renovations. Most of the time you are building false walls and removing or adjusting opening.
The average price as a guide for a pocket door cavity slider in a bathroom is anywhere between $1000 to $4000 depending on the level of work.
The type of door can also massively impact the cost of the cavity slider set up.

Are pocket doors good for bathroom?
Pocket doors are perfect doors for bathrooms. They are are the best for small bathrooms where you have limited space.
Ensuite renovations are ideal when you are wanting something unique and practical for a room with limited space.
I personally love pocked doors for my bathroom as they have such a wow factor and keeps the room cleaner.

The best part is the door adds convenience and attractiveness to your bathroom decor.
Saving space in your bathroom is the best reason for a cavity pocket door slider instead of that lousy swinging door into the space.
Lastly, the pocket door can be opened easily and will stop kids from slamming or swinging the old-fashioned pivot door into the wall or a shower screen behind it.
Difference between sliding doors and cavity doors in bathrooms
The big difference between the sliding doors and cavity doors is the external and internal nature of both.
A sliding door works by installing a track on the outside wall above the door frame and rolling it from one side to the other.
The big difference between the sliding barn door is the cavity door requires space to go into whereas the sliding door is more universal and allows you to install it a a lot more easily to an existing wall.
When it comes to existing bathrooms we install lot more sliding door setups for bathrooms instead of pocket doors for this reason.
The cost of a pocket door compared to a sliding door is a huge difference.
Pocket doors in an existing bathroom can be twice almost three times the cost compared to a sliding door.

Downsides of bathroom pocket doors
We shall end on a sad note that is all the downsides of pocket door cavity sliders.
Generally, pocket doors are more expensive compared to all other bathroom door setups.
Secondly, for me they are a lot more work when you are talking bathroom renovations and if you are on a budget.
Lastly, it is a small thing but they can be annoying to clean in the groves if you get dust down there.

So there you have it my complete breakdown of using pocket doors and cavity sliders in your bathrooms. If you want a door that looks amazing and adds wow factor while not taking up space the pocket door is for you. The best part about them really is they are perfect for small bathrooms
If you want a door that does not require all the work involved the sliding door is for you.
