We all hate grout yes we do so if you could make that bathroom grout last longer wouldn’t you? The answer I know is yes so welcome to the world of grout sealing.
Below we will cover three topics to help you with sealing grout in your bathroom and whether you should do it.
- Do’s and Don’ts Of Grout Sealing
- Should I Use Expoxy Grout For My Bathroom?
- What Grout Sealer Should I Use?
The Do’s and Donts Of Grout Sealing
So let’s start by saying grout fills seams between tiles. Most grout you will be using is called sanded, a grammatically unusual way of saying that the grout contains sand. Sand is used by manufacturers because it is cheap and because it is a good material for what is a simple job of filling in a hole.
Grout helps to stabilize the tile along with flexible adhesive. You do need to have the grout to stop your tiles from lifting or cracking over time.
Unfortunately sand is porous, which means that grout is porous. Once the grout has been applied and dried, it is ready to absorb any liquid that comes its way like water.
By penetrating the grout with sealer first, you are pre-empting water and other liquids from penetrating the grout.
So do not seal your bathroom tile grout or after a few days or old grout, it will just lock all those nasty in the grout.
You only want to seal the grout after you have just finished grouting it.
Always allow the first coat to soak before adding multiple coats, as instructed by the manufacturer of the sealer.
After that wipe the sealer off with a clean dry towel and allow the sealer to cure for up to 48 hours before cleaning or getting wet. That’s it – you’re done!
In conclusion Do grout your tiles straight after grout and DONT seal them after a few days.
Should I Use Expoxy Grout For My Bathroom?
I often get asked about using epoxy grout for bathrooms and I am always a little divided on using it. Epoxy grout is a grout that uses epoxy resin and silica fillers to make the grout less porous which sounds great in theory.
Personally and professionally I have two issues with using epoxy grouts in bathroom tiles.
Firstly it’s a nightmare product to use, it drys too fast and is not the easiest application to use.
Secondly, it looks plastic which is really my big issue with it. Compared to more natural-looking grout epoxy grout really does make your grout look funny and stands out a lot more compared to more sanded grout.
So should you use epoxy grout in your bathroom? It is a no for me but for the person who wants to get that extra protection on their grout, it is perfect.
What Grout Sealer Should I Use?
You will quickly seal the grout using a spray-on application, We recommend you use Sure Seal as it does not affect the tiles that are around the grout. It’s easy to use and lasts the longest in our opinion. You can pick up a can at your local tile store and apply it yourself. For about $20 it will be the best investment you could ever make
I am a huge fan of the spray grout sealers especially if you are doing it yourself at home.
The two types of bathroom grout sealer you get are the applicator sealer and the penetration grout sealer.
Applicator Grout Sealer
A spray-on grout sealer is an easy, but sometimes labor-intensive application, for grout sealer. The applicator or brush-on type of sealer is used and applied directly to the grout with a roller or with a brush. The sealer is a milky white color and can be applied to clean tiles.
Penetrating Sealer
The penetrating sealer is a type of sealer that is used to penetrate right into the grout. After you apply the sealer, it will soak right into the grout.
This type of sealer is great to use if you are looking to apply a different color to the grout or to darker the original color. They will help to create an additional tint on the grout. A penetrating grout sealer makes it much more difficult for staining to occur on the grout from spills.
If you are looking to maintain the color or pigment of your grout, then purchase a non-pigmented penetrating sealer. This type of sealer will still penetrate into the grout but it will not produce any type of gloss.
